In 1995 Simon and Judy Hennings decided to breed Red Angus Cattle in addition to the Back Angus which had been bred at Mt Hunter for the previous 20 years.

The focus at Mt Hunter is to breed larger framed, performance orientated Red Angus. To achieve this they have used their best black angus females that carry the red angus gene. This aim has been achieved particularly well from one of their black angus females - Merrigrange Mildred J12. She produced their first red angus and since that time Simon and Judy have won a broad ribbon at every Sydney Royal Show where Red Mildred progeny have been exhibited.

Their search for excellent stock has led the Mt Hunter Angus Stud to purchase a half share in a Red Angus female "Betty" in Canada. Betty was Grand Champion female at Agribition and Farmfair in Canada. Embryos from Betty by high quality US and Canadian sires are already performing well for the stud.

In 2000 Mt Hunter achieved the highest priced bull sold at the inaugural Red Angus National - and it is no coincidence that he was the result of one of "Betty's" imported embryos.
